California’s primary election is March 5, Super Tuesday, but of course, California’s elections are all by mail or drop box. I have committed, with my local Democratic Club, to participate in get-out-the vote activities. While drives to the polls is no longer necessary, people still need to be reminded to return their ballots on time, as well as being clued into who the endorsed candidates are. I have not committed to door-knocking (yet), but I have committed to making phone calls and sending postcard reminders. So I got my lists today, and I’m ready to do it.
A curious incident has occurred with respect to one of our endorsed candidates for California State Assembly; our district is District 75. The newly-redrawn district consists of about 75-80% of San Diego County; the only portion of the county that isn’t in this district is a strip along the coastline. District 75 is extremely rural, and therefore also extremely Republican. The seat is currently held by a Republican named Marie Waldron, from whom I get occasional e-mails complaining incessantly about Gavin Newsom. Judging from her photo, she’s a young woman, but she apparently has chosen not to run for re-election.
In the primary, three Democrats and three Republicans are running for the seat. The candidate that my local Democratic Club chose to endorse is named Kevin Juza. Two weeks ago, I started receiving mailers promoting Kevin Juza for the primary. These mailers were very weird because they referred to him as a “Democrat candidate.” We all know that no actual Democrat would say this. This mailer was brought up during the most recent Democratic Club meeting, and apparently, these mailers are actually being sent by one of the Republican candidates, one Carl DeMaio. Because California’s primary is completely open, allowing anyone to vote for anybody, it is possible (and it has happened) that two candidates of the same party could face each other; Carl DeMaio, who is apparently pretty confident he’ll be in the top two, wants to avoid running against another Republican in the general election, so he’s chosen to promote a Democrat in an attempt to lock out his GOP opponents. Why, yes, this is the definition of ratf***ing—essentially helping your weakest possible opponent in the primary to give you an advantage in the general. But it’s weird that DeMaio would be promoting the candidate we prefer, rather than a weaker one. On the other hand, winning the district is going to be a stretch for any Democrat.
Anyway, I’ve got some work to do.

Today, Greg Dworkin's Abbreviated Pundit Roundup of course contained much discussion of the outrageous report by Special Counsel Hur. I thought Crashing Vor made an excellent point.
