Disclaimer: Recently we’ve had a few a-holes parachute in and declare themselves. No one here is claiming to be experts. Many of the things I post won’t come with in depth research and links, when I do, I give the links(which are often still ignored.) What I post here is meant to be informational and up for discussion.
I continue to read articles and reports slamming EVs. Most of the articles I read come from interest in maintaining the dominance of Internal Combustion Engines, ICE. They may be coming from the fuel industry or some group that has an interest in maintaining their profit center, the care and servicing ICE automobiles, namely automobile(which includes trucks and SUVs) dealerships.
Believe it or not, the profit margin a dealership makes on the sale of a vehicle isn’t as big as many think it is. That’s what the unions were pointing out in their negotiations(that labor, even with their requested increases, would be in the neighborhood of 5%.) The manufacturers are making most of the money. That’s why dealerships have no desire to sell EVs. Servicing EVs won’t have the same level of post warranty maintenance needs. After owning an EV for 5 years, I can speak from experience.
Are there maintenance requirements? Of course there are. Just not to the same level as an ICE automobile. And as automobile manufacturers perfect the design, building and assembly of ICE autos, many of those maintenance items will diminish.
Two things;
- Just this week over 3800 automobile dealerships wrote an open letter to the Biden Administration asking them to back off of their targets for the manufacturing of EVs.
- Consumer Reports came out with a report this week that says EVs have a higher problem with reliability than ICE automobiles. The problem with the report is that it had to go back to 2000 and include hybrids, fuel cell and early models of battery only EVs.
Twenty-three years. They had to go back 23 years in order to slam today’s EVs. There are a lot of people deeply invested in maintaining the status quo in automobiles.
