An ancient Japanese legend (千羽鶴, senbazuru; literally “1000 cranes”) promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by the gods. Some stories believe you are granted happiness and eternal good luck, instead of just one wish, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury.
Sadako Sasaki was 2 years old when on August 6, 1945 the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. We all know that story.
She developed leukemia as a result and at age 12 began folding 1,000 origami cranes inspired by the senbazuru legend She died in 1955.
Please let us not debate the use of the bomb here, but rather work to make it obsolete.
I will be going down to the Portland Japanese American Historical Plaza tonight to bear witness.
I really like this story adaptation even though I get a bit misty eyed.
