You know the one.
Yeah, one.
But, did you know there are currently thirty-three existing national emergencies?
Okay, you can be mad that I’m using Wikipedia as a source, but this seems pretty accurate. So, which one?
I’m sure everyone is thinking it’s the National Emergency Concerning the Southern Border of the United States (Proclamation 9844) I’m talking about. Yeah, that’s the one, the “build the wall” one, because it’s one of the more outrageous ones. But the president has also declared Imposing Certain Sanctions in the Event of Foreign Interference in a United States Election (Executive Order 13848) (that’s a hoot) and Blocking Property of Certain Persons Contributing to the Situation in Nicaragua (Executive Order 13851).
But, there are currently ten such “emergencies” still in effect from President Obama. All ten are of the sanctions variety (unlike Proclamation 9844, which is Military). Then under Bush (43), there are still eleven such emergencies, the most notable being Declaration of National Emergency by Reason of Certain Terrorist Attacks (Proclamation 7463) dated September 14, 2001.
But wait, there’s more! There are six that are still in effect from Clinton, and finally, the oldest one, Blocking Iranian Government Property (Executive Order 12170).
All of these are renewed each year, and the administration is supposed to file quarterly reports on expenses.
So, did you know just how much of an emergency our country is in?? I didn’t.
