Sometimes I need to take a day to just detox from the seemingly unrelenting horror generated from witnessing the relentless GOP assault of cruelty and corruption. Every time I get in my shower or lay down in my bed, I grieve for the 1,000’s of innocent immigrants that do not have that opportunity. It is hard to enjoy the simple pleasures in life when you know that so many people in our country are under attack for simply being who they are. Usually I can feel better after engaging with my kids or grand kids or by doing something positive. Some days it takes a little more to lift the spirits. Yesterday was one of those days.
It was a gorgeous summer day. My mobility has been limited due to surgery earlier in the summer, but I am improving. We decided to take a road trip for the day to see something new to us. I looked around for possibilities and saw information about the Kathleen Savage Browning Miniature Collection housed in the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center in Maysville, KY. I have enjoyed miniature exhibits in various museums across the country, but this one made the others pale in comparison. The shear number of items was unbelievable, the workmanship was exquisite.
Below is a small sample of the many miniature works of art. The trumpet and french horn even had tiny mouthpieces crafted to go with them. The boy is holding a tiny butterfly on his finger. The rugs and afghan are real. It was hard to get good pictures of some of the bigger pieces like multiroom houses due to the reflection on the glass, but that does not hinder the wonder of seeing the work in person.
So if you need an escape into a beautiful and expansive and mind blowing work of art, I can recommend a trip to Maysville to find an unexpected treasure.
There was also a quilt shop. Unfortunately, like most of the businesses in town, it closed too early for us to shop, which means I may go back to Maysville for a second visit to the museum early enough to also catch the quilt shop.
