I was always taught “Ignorance of the law is no excuse.” Prosecutors tend to be aggressive when they smell an easy conviction.
I’m only a quarter of the way through the Mueller Report, but I heard of Rachel Maddow’s show that Mueller, in the report, claimed he couldn’t prove the Trumps’ criminal because they were political newbies totally ignorant of complicated things like espionage and campaign finance law.
A prosecutor like Mueller makes an ignorance excuse for the Trumps? I thought due diligence by Trump would be to employ a lawyer on the campaign to prevent conflicts with the law. Now I hear Trump has an excuse because he was careless. Brazen, actually. I've got to think when truth to power is thoroughly defeated by ignorance, that's how a great nation dies. Thank you, Robert Mueller, for surrendering at the first sign of stupidity.
The interview with George Stephanopoulos made it clear that Trump had to have been colluding with the Russians. If the Russians were around with dirt, and they were, Trump would have listened to their proposal. He all but told Putin and our other enemies, Come on. Let’s do it again.”
There’s nothing in the Constitution that says a president can’t be prosecuted for crimes, like the rest of us. However, the Justice Department has made it a rule, without any process, legislative or Constitutional. Yet, under several presidents, the Justice Department decided to foist this on us when it didn’t seem important.
One terrible implication of this is a president (Trump) might refuse to leave office when he’s impeached, voted out, or he served his second term. It’s his best defense against going to prison. Or his children going to prison.
For the last 70 years, Americans (Congress) has been giving the presidency more and more power. We’ve reached a point where it’s now a very good career move for a sociopath to obtain the office. Especially a sociopathic narcissist. In fact, the entire executive branch is now a haven for such people. And we’re giving them more power and letting them keep it because normal people follow a system that sociopathic narcissists game by instinct.
We can stop it with impeachment, but that would be abnormal. The system straightening itself out without anything drastic is far too comforting. “Don’t worry,” say the Pelosi-ites. “All we have to do is win the next fixed election.” And hope the next one isn’t more fixed, after what Trump said?
