This is just a follow-up on a diary I wrote in the spring, where I was looking for information on attending my son’s Navy basic training graduation in Chicago. Thanks to all who chimed in with tips and anecdotes. The graduation was a success, Chicago traffic absolutely sucked, and O’Hare was exactly the nightmare I was told to expect. The sunny spot—besides hanging out with my son—was Chicago style pizza. It is definitely all that.
So Aaron left Great Lakes for A-School in Pensacola, where he’s about halfway through aviation and aircraft carrier deck operations school. Last week his first duty assignment came out. Bremerton. Yep, he’s coming right back home to work on the Stennis. He loves the idea, but if I were him I’d be pissed. I hope he gets a future assignment somewhere out in the world.
G’night!

I already had “the talk” with my sailor—the one about investing in the Thrift Savings Plan and getting the G.I. Bill account going. The kid is a step ahead of me on this because the stingy son-of-a-gun just loves to save money. He’ll start college classes as soon as he’s eligible.
