I don’t want to be accused of being a grammar— no, I don’t want to use that word, either, so I’ll say I don’t want to be a grammar pedant. I do have one pet grammar peave, however. Often on fake news sites, and alas even here on Daily Kos, I see the possessive form of “it” written incorrectly as “it’s.”
Just for fun, I came up with an example of how the presence or absence of the apostrophe might be needed to correctly resolve an otherwise ambiguous sentence.
Consider the following pairs of statements. In the poll below, indicate which form, "its" or "it's", is correct for each pair.
A. We weren’t sure whether the document was classified secret or top secret. The agent told us {its, it’s} secret.
B. None of us understood how such a device could work so effectively without making any noise. The agent told us {its, it’s} secret.
