Toenail fungus. Yes, I have it. I suppose I can thank 25 years of combat boots and hot aircraft parking ramps. Some days we’d sweat so bad our boots were stained white with dried salt. I asked my P.A. about the anti-fungal medicine but he says he cannot ethically prescribe it since the odds of success are low and the potential for liver damage is high. He humored me anyway, and had blood drawn so he could check my liver function. Oops, slightly elevated liver stuff, so further pissing off my liver is out of the question.
I’m going the home remedy route instead. Right now my feet are soaking in a solution of equal parts water and vinegar, with a quarter cup or so of peroxide thrown in. Foot paksiw. Yum! Since DKOS is full of smart people who might know something about home remedies, I thought I’d ask:
- Has anyone gone the home remedy route for toenail fungus?
- What remedy did you you use?
- Did it work?
I’ve been doing this for two days and I notice a few things:
- No itchy feet. I didn’t know my feet even itched until after soaking the left foot in pure vinegar. I think the vinegar nuked something.
- There appears to be a slight change in the surface of the worst nail.
Being a military guy, if the remedy says “25% vinegar for 30 minutes” I’m likely to ramp that up to 50% vinegar for 45 minutes. Any risk in this, other than smelling like pickles?
So have at it, folks! I’d love to know that someone else has dealt with this, and what works.

Thanks for all the advice! I’m going to do the following:
- Do whatever the podiatrist recommends.
- Continue with the 2X daily vinegar soak. It can’t hurt and might keep the fungus from spreading.
- Find some tea tree or similar oil and dab the affected nails before putting on shoes.
