Frankly, this is a drive-by post. It’s late at night in the UK and it’s generally pyjama time for me. However, the BBC had a story on a Canadian consortium that proposes to mine around hydrothermal vents in the deep sea around Papua New Guinea by grinding up the sea floor a mile underwater. David Attenborough went on record as being seriously appalled, as well he might be after recording some wondrous footage of similar places for Blue Planet 2.
One of my objections to fracking has been that fossil fuel consumption is like having a cookie addiction and, when the cookies run out, bingeing on raw dough. This disgusting proposal takes that principle and ups it exponentially. The mining gear is in place and they’re ready to go ahead. The Company’s excuse is that it will benefit the population but, as someone who witnessed the habitat destruction of New Guinea rainbow fish in the ‘90s, I’ve heard that reasoning before and it doesn’t hold water.
Please sign this petition or support the Ocean Foundation, and let the company know that they have no social license. Short of going to New Guinea and confronting them personally, that’s the best we can do.
