Well, it's happened again: another "cease and desist" order is being contemplated over a song co-opted without permission.
[...] Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger,” co-written by [Jim] Peterik and Survivor guitarist Frankie Sullivan — became a phenomenon. “Eye of the Tiger” wasn’t just a No. 1 hit that changed the lives of its authors. It was an unforgettable anthem that transcended the film that birthed it — one adaptable enough to, say, be used as the entrance music for [Kim Davis,] a Kentucky court clerk released from jail Tuesday after refusing to grant marriage licenses in the wake of the Supreme Court’s same-sex marriage ruling.
One would think that the examples set by countless GOP candidates, from John McCain to Michelle Bachmann to Mitt Romney to Donald Trump would have made folks more cautious about using other people's creative ideas to bolster their own without asking permission.
Perhaps a lawsuit might make it a little clearer, something that is being contemplated.
For my part, as a Christian I was surprised that Kim Davis' supporters didn't choose a hymn for her grand entrance. They had already been singing "Amazing Grace" -- they could have chosen "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" or something similar.
I suppose we should be grateful they didn't choose Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Released." :-)
But I wonder. What other songs might they have chosen that would have been embraced by the composer?
