This is the 2015 entry in the astronomical events liveblog series. Sorry for having missed 2014.
A super blood moon is going on tonight. That is, a total lunar eclipse, where the moon is at its perigee.
General rules for an astronomical event liveblog are:
- Go outside, if you are not outside already. Look at the sky, and report back here what you see.
- If you can see what we are talking about here without going outside, you can report that.
- Talk about anything else you would like.
There is a time schedule at the bottom of this diary.
Super Blood Moon FAQ
Will the world end?
Pastor John Hagee says perhaps, because of Four Blood Moons and Three Heavens.
The Belleville News-Democrat says probably not.
What should I do if, during the super blood moon, I observe signs that the world is ending?
Please contribute your observations to the liveblog.
How did Pastor John Hagee manage to get his name all over Google News for this event?
I don't know.
In your 2010 Total Lunar Eclipse Liveblog, you did not talk about any "blood moons". You just called it a total lunar eclipse. Are you sure the blood moon stuff is a good idea?
NASA seems OK with it.
How does Tom Scocca at Gawker feel about the blood moon stuff?
So angry that he also starts ranting that some words have been taken out of a junior dictionary, whereas other words have been added.
What color will the super blood moon be?
Who can see what where?
Anyone in the United States can see at least something. Anyone east of Oklahoma City and west of Hamburg can see the whole show, start to finish. Weather allowing.
space.com has a map.
What happens if I live west of Oklahoma City?
The eclipse will already have started when the moon rises. But a shadowed or odd colored moon rising from the horizon is still very dramatic.
Can I follow the super blood moon on twitter?
There is a hashtag.
Can I watch the super blood moon in a livestream?
Yes.
Can I read about the super blood moon at Wikipedia?
Yes.
What does a total lunar eclipse look like from the moon?
Something like this.
