Staten Island DA Daniel Donovan, the GOP nominee for the special election for New York's 11th Congressional district, handily won the seat on Tuesday night. Donovan is known nationally as the prosecutor handling the Eric Garner chokehold case, in which the NYPD officers were not indicted. Donovan defeated Democratic candidate Vincent Gentile and Green Party candidate James Lane. Turnout in Staten Island and southern Brooklyn was very low, and it was lackluster turnout in the heavily diverse North Shore area of Staten Island, where some African-American voters felt that nothing would change regardless of who won.
I think that the Staten Island Democratic Party should look to Assemblyman Michael Cusick, State Senator Diane Savino, or former Congressman Michael McMahon for 2016 against Donovan. Donovan can be beat in November 2016, it will be a presidential-turnout year, and Hillary Clinton, if she is the nominee of the Democratic Party for president, can mobilize voters in Staten Island, the Clintons are popular in Staten Island, although Staten Island is the most conservative borough in NYC.
It's time for the DNC, DCCC, New York State Democratic Committee, SI Democratic Party, and Brooklyn Democratic Party to look for a candidate that can defeat corrupt Daniel Donovan in 2016.
