It is another sad time for our community and for the entire US. We gather tonight to remember the life of a sailor who died while in service to his country.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Devon J. Doyle was from the state of Colorado. He had graduated in 2012 and had just celebrated his 21st birthday.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Devon J. Doyle
Devon J. Doyle was the only son of Brian and Leslie Doyle of Alamosa, Colorado. He was an avid outdoorsman. Shortly after he graduated from Alamosa High School in 2012, Devon joined the US Navy on September 19, 2012.
Doyle was assigned to his first ship, the USS Farragut (DDG 99). It is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. which is homeported in Mayport, Florida. The Farragut is supporting Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR), a US-led air strike campaign against the Islamic State (IS) in Syria and Iraq.
The USS Farragut went to the Persian Gulf last month along with the carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. Its mission was to counter Iranian actions to aid insurgents in Yemen. On April 28, The Farragut was sent to shadow Iranian navy vessels that seized a cargo vessel. The destroyer is currently in Bahrain for a routine port visit.
Bahrain, which is home to the U.S. 5th Fleet, is a popular port to visit for U.S. Navy ships deployed to the region. The tiny Persian Gulf island nation offers a variety of recreational activities and nightlife for sailors on liberty. Manama is the capital and largest city of Bahrain. The city of Manama is home to the American 5th Fleet, which oversees sailors battling Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Doyle was a damage controlman fireman aboard the Farragut. On May 16th, Doyle was on leave from his post on the Farragut, which was docked in Bahrain. It was just a couple weeks after his 21st birthday on May the 1st.
He was spending his liberty in Manama when he fell to his death from a seventh-floor apartment balcony in Juffair, a suburban neighborhood of Manama. Doyle was pronounced dead at the scene. Navy officials say that the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation. The Navy said it is cooperating with Bahraini authorities to investigate the death.
According to his hometown paper, the Valley Courier, Doyle's commander said of him:
"He was an outstanding shipmate who was a positive influence on all who worked with him. He will be deeply missed. The Officers and Crew of FARRAGUT are thankful to have served our outstanding nation with a such a fine Sailor.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Devon J. Doyle is survived by his parents and 3 sisters - Kalin, Ali and Ashley. His paternal grandfather died earlier this year. No funeral plans have been announced as of yet.

About the IGTNT series:
”I Got the News Today” is a diary series intended to honor, respect, and remember the fallen, and to remind us that each casualty has family and friends who received the terrible news that their loved one has died. US service members whose names have been released by the US Department of Defense will usually be diarized two days after the official announcement on the DoD website. This allows the IGTNT team to cover each person more fully, but still in a timely manner. Click the IGTNT tag below to see previous diaries in the series, which was begun by i dunno, and is maintained by i dunno, Sandy on Signal, Monkeybiz, Noweasels, Blue Jersey Mom, Chacounne, twilight falling, SisTwo, Spam Nunn, True Blue Majority, CalNM, Wide Awake in Kentucky, maggiejean, Jax Dem, The Fat Lady Sings, Ekaterin, & Joy of Fishes. These diaries are heartbreaking to write, but show our community’s respect for those who have died.
