So I'm going to tell you why Pete Carroll's call wasn't the 'Worst Call In Football History'... although it was definitely not a good one. So take a little journey through time with me here -
First some stats and facts: You must keep in mind we are at the 1 yard line. And the play that was called was a Passing Play. (that means the Quarterback is supposed to throw it to someone on his own team and that player is supposed to either catch it and run it forward, or run and catch it... preferably inside the end-zone. In this case only a single yard) Are you with me? I'm trying to keep this simple.
Now I want to tell you a bit more about this particular play throughout the season. At or inside the 1 yard line, this Passing Play, when you look at every game and every team in the NFL was attempted 108 times. The Quarterback throws and his Receiver hopefully catches it and makes the touchdown.
How many times do think this play, this season was successful? Well I'll tell ya. Up until the Super Bowl, NFL teams had thrown the ball 108 times on the opposing team’s 1-yard line this season. And of those passes, 66 had produced touchdowns. (that's a success rate of 61.1 percent) More importantly, ZERO INTERCEPTIONS! The only one that did was the one this story is about. See, it's practically impossible that the play could result in an interception by the Patriots. 'Practically Impossible' being the key phase here... not impossible.
And that is why football is so fucking awesome... even if my team didn't win.
