There is a grocery store I go to all the time. At the checkout, I used to see teenagers bagging groceries. I'm sure they still do but at my store I now see elderly men and women doing this job.
Today an old lady was bagging groceries, She had to be in her late 70s or 80s. A 30 something on her cell phone was in front of me While waiting to pay she kept talking. She did stop long enough to ask for help carrying her groceries to her car. An elderly lady was carrying a physically fit ladies groceries. The younger lady sat in her car while the old lady put groceries in the car. She Drove away, and the old lady ambled back.
A 78-year-old woman I know works in retail. One of my closest friends is 68 and cleans houses for extra money. She readily admits she will die scrubbing floors.
A 70-year friend is soon to be homeless. She had good jobs but spent her savings caring
for her mother. She receives $1,100 a month in Social Security. Her mobile home park charges $500 a month to let her park her mobile home. She has a bank payment she took out to repair her car. She has pets that she knows she can't keep.
She can't stand for very long and has P.T.S.D. because of a very abusive marriage.
She has sold her valuables, family heirlooms, and now goes to the food bank.
There will be no "cola" increases (cost of living) in Social Security in 2016. Insurance
payments will rise, and deductibles will rise as well.Republicans want to lower payments
not raise them.
In a perfect world, folks would have large "nest eggs" to supplement Social Security.
Life gets in the way of allowing middle-class folks to keep their savings or as much as they had.
This conversation affects all of us. I'm thrilled if you have plenty of money to enjoy your senior years.
For thousands, getting old means nothing but more work. Older people do suffer from age discrimination and must take menial jobs.
People in power need to rewrite our budget and take money away from defense and other programs to double Social Security payments to seniors.
Depression is rampant with my friends. They see only death ahead and no money to enjoy their "last chapter" of life.

Maybe moving to a country that cares for the elderly is the best idea: America doesn"t
-There's no such thing as ageing gracefully. I don't meet people who want to get Alzheimer's disease, or who want to get cancer or arthritis or any of the other things that afflict the elderly. Ageing is bad for you, and we better just actually accept that.
