Noam Chomsky, father of modern linguistics
From Italy: linguini
From the dictionary Logic:
Reasoning conducted or assessed according to strict principles of validity: experience is a better guide to this than deductive logic | he explains his move with simple logic | the logic of the argument is faulty.
• a particular system or codification of the principles of proof and inference: Aristotelian logic.
• the systematic use of symbolic and mathematical techniques to determine the forms of valid deductive argument.
• the quality of being justifiable by reason: there's no logic in telling her not to hit people when that's what you're doing.
• (logic of) the course of action or line of reasoning suggested or made necessary by: if the logic of capital is allowed to determine events.
And from the dictionary: Linguistics
pluralnoun [ treated as sing. ]
the scientific study of language and its structure, including the study of morphology, syntax, phonetics, and semantics. Specific branches of linguistics include sociolinguistics, dialectology, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, historical-comparative linguistics, and applied linguistics.
So, let's analyze the first part of the definition of "Logic": Reasoning conducted or assessed according to strict principles of validity.
A priori, this rules out the vast majority of Repuglicans--they have their own, supreme operant principle: "Don't bother me with the facts, I have my opinions." This ruling principle was embraced verbally on Fox News in 2014 [sorry for absent citation] when one of their talking heads was complaining about Democratic fact-checkers.
This does not leave us with a level playing field, because ultimately Repuglicans hide under the refuge of "that's God's Law." So there is NO REASONING WITH STUPIDITY.
Back to linguistics: the scientific study of language and its structure.
Wow! Another bad way to introduce dialogue with Repuglicans--that old sticking point--Science. Now Michelle Bachmann and other great Repuglican intellectuals profoundly endorse creationism, which fits in with their version of Science, i.e. synonymous with God's Law. (More about God's Law in another diary).
Okay, okay…so what has this to do with linguini? Linguini, when boiled, is soft and malleable (just like Repuglican logic). Linguistics is based on science, even incorporating statistics (e.g. paleolinguistics).
So lets take a few declensions: first, regarding body weight.
About me: I'm not fat, I have big bones
About you: you are plump
About him: he is morbidly obese
It's all relative.
About me: I am steadfast
About you: you are torpid
About him: he is obstructionist
Oh, you say, the same concept can be expressed with different emotional valences. You got that right, Sis!
A more recent example: The Freedom Act. This is a Repuglican plot to continue uninterrupted governmental snooping into everyone's business. Funny how this is coming from the political party purporting to be the party of small government
Thus like well-boiled linguini, words can be folded and wrapped around concepts having very little relationship with the usual meaning.
By "self-defense", Repuglicans really mean pre-emptive war.
By "lessening bureaucratic interference" Repuglicans means freedom from governmental oversight on the Banking Industry, Chemical industry, Fossil fuel processors, etc.
This list can be expanded greatly, but my Alligator mind is now exhausted.
