Over the past two months, I've put in several applications and have had two interviews, with no luck whatsoever finding a job that suits my skills. Just the other day, I was blindsided with a phone call from a company asking me if I was still interested in working for them.
Of course, they had to call me as I was preparing dinner at about 6:30 pm. So, after a bit of conversation the rude lady decided I wouldn't be very good at the job because I don't "communicate well". Or, in reality, they wanted someone who would kiss ass no matter how bad things would get at the workplace.
So, rather than sit there and ask myself why in the hell I bothered going to college, I think I'll give self employment a try. I suppose anything's better than perusing through useless websites that do little to nothing to get my foot in the door anywhere. It's certainly better than trying to find a job when neither the private nor the public sector will touch me no matter how often I follow up with employers.
Now, about this self employment thing...I spent a bit of time over the last 13 months restoring old photos for a relative and they seemed to be quite happy with my work. I did this for a few other people too, but those projects weren't quite as extensive. I didn't do anything crazy with the photos, either. I simply wanted to get them as close to their original state as I could, and that wasn't always possible.
I suppose it'll take a lot of work to get up and running, but at least I'd be doing something constructive, because looking for a job is a complete waste of time and skills at this point and given how polarized we are as a country, that likely will not change anytime soon. It's going to be scary and interesting all at the same time. Perhaps that isn't so bad.
See you around,
Homer
