A new wave of CISPA look-alike bills are now making their way through the House Intelligence Committee. Besides a literal new CISPA by Mike Rogers & Dutch Ruppersberger themselves (apparently called "FISATMA" this time) is another by Jim Sensenbrenner which can only be called a bait-and-switch.
Given the Rovian name of "USAFREEDOM" (which Marcy Wheeler has dubbed the Freedumb Act), it was originally pitched as a marginally better alternative to Rogers-Ruppersberger since it included NSA transparency requirements that the other bill lacked — that is, until Sensenbrenner added a new manager's amendment that stripped that language, resulting in an NSA gift-bag that's practically the same as CISPA.
(Over at Emptywheel, Wheeler explained just today what effect this bill would have on Section 215 of FISA.)
The markup on this manager's amendment is tomorrow. If your representative is on the Intelligence Committee, urge him or her to vote No on this bill's current form.
