I've written recently about the need to find common ground for copyright reforms and enforcement, possibly updating the Electronic Copyright Office technology to allow larger file uploads of more open and common video formats like the H.264 codec and .mp4 wrappers that are commonly used by indy media, and probably porn.
Today there will be a twitter discussion moderated by a porn industry lawyer who often advocates for individual performers and is usually great on employment law from my liberal, leftist perspective. Obviously the fact that Redtube, owned by corporate behemoth Mindgeek (was Manwin) hosts stolen content from sites that compete with their own membership sites is an anti-competitive practice as well as a shady practice that currently skirts the intent of the DMCA, by masking itself as an ISP with safe harbor provisions. In the recent Nightline coverage of Redtube, anti-piracy consultant Nate Glass explained that he has sent Mindgeek and Redtube millions of DMCA takedown notices for infringement.
Now, Samuel L. Jackson has flippantly endorsed internet movie piracy, at least by Redtube and with adult films, not the Hollywood films that pay his rent. And porn performers, independent site operators, and the indy media outfits that folllow the industry are upset and organized, at least on twitter, to begin to address it:
I'll follow the conversation, possibly joining in, and I hope that many more from DailyKos will take an interest in the issues that arise.
Not stealing porn is probably a baby step towards fair trade porn.
