Veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan and live within driving distance are encouraged to look into a study being conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Center for Investigating Healthy Minds.
The Veterans Wellness Study is a research project to help scientists discover new effective strategies for veterans adjusting to life after combat.
Free complementary and alternative programs will be offered as part of the study that is evaluating the effectiveness of these types of programs for returning Veterans. The findings could lead to a new model of care for those with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Free workshops, offered as part of the research study, include group discussions, breathing exercises, meditation and gentle stretching.
Sessions take place at the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the Waisman Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Depending on the level of participation, Veterans are paid up to $380. Reimbursement for gas (within 100 miles of Madison, WI) is offered.
Per telephonic conversation with a Veterans Wellness Study staffer there are up to thirteen sessions which average about two hours per session.
Interested veterans can email wellness@mailplus.wisc.edu or call (608) 263-0803 to schedule a screening appointment.
If you or someone you know served in OEF/OIF, have a diagnosis of PTSD, and live anywhere near Madison this might be just exactly what the doctor would have ordered if they'd only known what to order.
