I just got a letter from the Board of Elections:
This confirmation notice has been issued pursuant to federal and state law. You are receiving this notice because a mailing stent to your address on file with the county board of elections has been returned as undeliverable.
The letter goes on to demand my address, driver's license number, SSN and so forth, threatening to purge me from the voter rolls. It closes with this threat:
WHOEVER COMMITS ELECTION FALSIFICATION IS GUILTY OF A FELONY OF THE FIFTH DEGREE
Here's the thing. Since I moved to Ohio I have had one and only one address. My mailbox works just fine. My mail was
not returned as undeliverable. But I do live in a racially-mixed democratic urban neighborhood. A neighborhood where not everybody has a driver's license - and I note the letter did not just ask for ID, but a driver's license.
Cincinnati is pretty much blue, though it is gerrymandered into two red districts. The State Legislature is GOP, and they control the Board of Elections. I wonder if these notices are also going out to wealthy, Republican Butler County?
CORRECTION: The fine print will also accept other forms of ID, but the demand for a license is bigger and bolder.
