On Wednesday, I went to Zuccotti Park with some warm clothes and some Halloween candy. I'd wanted to post these that evening, but got a stomach thing and -- well, here I am five days later. Things change very quickly at each Occupy Together site, but some things don't change: the passion of the people there and of the people supporting them, and the important work they are doing. Every day I wear my "Support the Occupation of Wall Street" button, and every day people ask me whether I think it's doing anything. Inevitably, the talk turns to injustice and inequity, and I point out that these conversations are now taking place all over the world, and that it's clear that the Occupation movement is "doing something."
The park looks completely different from the last time I was there. For one thing, the tents are up:
For another, the signage is different: easier to spot from farther away, more standardized, and using upcycled materials! It's just cooler all around:
The People's Library is bigger and more comprehensive than ever:
And here are some friends, old and new:
Two vets. (There'd been a veterans' march earlier, but there are plenty of vets there every day.) Recognize Sgt. Shamar Thomas?
I hope to take my oldest son for a while on Tuesday afternoon. It's time.
We are the 99%.
