From MSNBC:
KABUL, Afghanistan - A Western official said that nine U.S. soldiers have been killed in a multi-pronged insurgent attack on a remote American base in eastern Afghanistan.
The attack appears to be the deadliest against U.S. forces in Afghanistan in years.
NATO's International Security Assistance force said that militants fired machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars from homes and a mosque in the village of Wanat in Kunar province, a mountainous region that borders Pakistan.
Afghanistan is rapidly becoming our second great national nightmare. And now Bush wants to take thousands of US troops out of the Iraqi frying pan and dump them into the Afghanistani fire.
Update: The updated MSNBC story now indicates that there were 15 additional US soldiers wounded in this battle. That's 15 more families and countless friends and others who will have to cope with the grief resulting from this insanity. Our prayers go out to them all.
