Last Thursday I had the honor of taking the oath of office for a seat on our local town board. (I narrowly lost the election last November, but the three remaining board members, all republicans btw, voted to appoint me to an existing vacancy. But that's perhaps a diary for another day...) And as I was pondering the awesome responsibility that comes with serving the people of my community in a legislative postion, I began to wonder about the folks on this site and how they might be serving their towns, counties, states, and country.
We are obviously a caring and involved bunch of people here. Caring and involvement are pretty much synonymous with being a "Kossack". From volunteer firefighters to soup kitchen workers to congress members, I'm sure that among the thousands of active users at this site, there are tons of us who serve the people in one way or another.
My own journey spans a couple of decades of town service. I spent 13 years on the local planning board, 7 years as a volunteer EMT/Paramedic. I've headed various town advisory committees. I was our town's first(and only) recycling director. And last November I earned a spot on the county Democratic committee. And while that may seem like a fair amount of community involvement, I personally know lots of people in my small town, who's record of service is vastly greater than mine.
But enough about me.
Tell me (and your fellow dKos members) how you serve. Please take the poll and share with us how you serve.
