As we approach the August 8th Democratic primary here in Connecticut the political ads and flyers keep on coming. In the last three days I've gotten mail from both Lamont's and Lieberman's campaigns.
Joe's literature gets more and more desperate, but if its intent is to change the hearts and minds of CT Dems who haven't quite switched over to Lamont's camp...it's my opinion that his rhetoric will have the opposite effect.
In the latest flyer, a very fancy tri-fold brochure that must have cost a pretty penny...there is a picture of a chameleon with the dictionary definition "1) A species with the ability to change the color of its skin" and "2) Also refers to politicians who regularly change their positions." Then a See Also reference....to guess who? Ned Lamont. Oh, my how very clever. On the following pages the talking points that we've heard ad nauseum throughout Lieberman's feeble campaign go like this: Ned Lamont voted with Greenwich Republicans 80% of the time while serving on the Greenwich Board of Selectmen, Lamont voted to cut school funding, Lamont contributed to Lieberman's campaign three times after the war started, and the never-ending question of why Lamont won't release his tax returns. In that same flyer there's a picture of a mule with the following line "Joe Lieberman is as tough and steady as a mule. Voters always know where he stands."
In another flyer we are subjected to the same talking points I just laid out in the previous paragraph, but there's the additional slam that "Lamont has invested heavily in the war he claims to oppose." This is in reference to Halliburton, "a company known for making huge profits on the Iraq war". The main thrust of this flyer is the mantra "Who is he and whose side would he really be on?" "Who will Ned Lamont side with in Washington?" Well, we KNOW who Joe sides with in Washington, don't we?
My question to Lieberman is this: Why the outrage over someone who has never served as a senator before? Why is he dredging up issues that could easily be used against his own record in the 18 years he's been in Washington? We should also be outraged that Joe behaves like a MULE and refuses to change direction even in the face of facts and truth. Why is he NOW so concerned about bringing up the issue of Halliburton when he's been so cozy with the Bush/Cheney team? Why is his wife a paid lobbyist for the pharmaceutical industry? Why does ChoicePoint contribute to his coffers? Why Why Why? So many unanswered questions.
Joe, I say your conduct is definitely unbecoming for a sitting senator. It's time for a new beginning with Ned Lamont!
