Yes, Connecticut was blessed on Monday by the appearance of the only Bush family member with more than frigid poll numbers. That, in itself, baffles me..how can any woman who would put up with George as a husband, never mind a world leader, support and love a bully like W? And, then, why would three-fourths of the public have a favorable view of her? Go figure...
At any rate, Laura came to raise money in support of three House Republicans facing stiff challenges, namely Chris Shays, Nancy Johnson, and Rob Simmons.
And here's how the visit went, according to the Danbury News Times.
Speaking on behalf of Shays, Johnson, and Simmons Bush was quoted as saying the follwing.
Each one of them are passionate advocates for the people of Connecticut.
And here's how she "helped" each one of the "passionate" candidates.
Bush...praised Shays for his strong support for the war in Iraq, noting that he recently returned from his 12th trip to the Mideast nation.
And then, as if that wasn't helpful enough, with hubby's approval rating in CT dipping down to 24%, she got even more "helpful".
She praised Simmons for helping to prevent the military from closing the Groton submarine base and saving jobs.
OK...so Laura loves war and the military. Great!
And, then, to bring up yet one more incredible GW blunder she
cited Johnson for her legislation to add prescription drug coverage to Medicare.
We all know how well the prescription drug program is working, right?
Good grief! All that could have made this any more helpful would be if she thanked them for turning a blind eye to prison torture, wire tapping, George leaking classified information, and the extortion of the oil companies.
Diane Farrell, who is challenging Shays, has made the Iraq war the central issue in this race. Here's what she had to say about the Bush visit.
This is a reward for him [Shays] being loyal to the president's administration. Both Chris and the president have been terribly wrong on the war.
And then Bush continued to put her foot in her mouth when she went on to praise Governor Jodi Rell.
She's doing a terrific job as your governor. She's restoring the public's trust in state government.
All Bush was doing was reminding us that Jodi Rell only looks so good because her Republican predecessor, John Rowland, went to jail for this: a plea agreement whereby he admitted to one federal criminal charge of corruption by conspiring to defraud Connecticut "citizens of the intangible right to the honest services of its Governor," and defrauding the I.R.S. of tax revenue by failing to report gratuities.
Now, he was small potatoes compared to Abramoff and Delay, but he was just cutting his teeth and I'm sure would have been a fast study. But, alas, his career was cut short. And Laura reminded us of this because she's so helpful.
And so the visit of the helpful First Lady has faded, but rest assured there are future visits planned to boost these Republicans' campaigns by none other than Rudi Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg.
It looks like the Republicans that Republicans want to be seen with is shrinking.
