So the Democrats are united on social security. BFD. Social Security is the easiest thing in American politics to defend. THer's a reason it's called hte third rail. Because anyone who touches it gets zapped. Basically, the Democrats are united in their resolve to not do anything. Good for them. Social Security should be left alone.
But in the process, they've voted for Abu Gonzales, Condi Rice, tort reform which only hurts people and helps corporations, and that giant present to republican donors in teh form of the bankruptcy bill. They've failed to raise the minimum wage, and don't seem to eager to pick up that cause again anytime soon.
Meanwhile, the minimum wage hasn't been raised in nearly 10 years.
THe Dems need to fillibuster. If ther' is anything that needs a stink raised about it, it's the fact that wages are stagnant while price of goods continues to increase. No more of this "we're saving it for the judges." While they are waiting for hte supreme court nominations, poor people are being pissed on, by our government and by our corporations. With their completely innefectual campaigning the last 6 years, not to mention their complete lack of spine and message, the fillibuster is the only option they have right now, other than rolling over and shopwing the Republicans their bellies. THey need to completely shut down government business, like the repubs in the 90's, until a livable minimum wage is enforced. (and not one that comes with all kinds of exemptions for such and sucha business) Howard Dean spoke of poeple with confederate flags needing to vote with us, instead of against heir own economic intersts. How are we representing the poor? How are Democrats representing the poor's interest any better than the republicnas. (And no, a symbolic vote in futile protest doesn't count.)
THe dems need to fillibuster every single bill that comes through until minimum wage is increased. THey need to fillibuster every attempt to steal from the poor to line the pockets of republican donors. (ie, the bankruptcy bill) The Repubs are going to call us obstructionists anyways, and all kinds of nasty things. Explain that if the republicans weren't so hung up on hurting the poor, it wouldn't be necessary. Get our side on the Sunday talk shows and in the sound bites. State that we aren't trying to be obstructionists, but that the right is far too radical, and that their bills are horrid.
