Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said Sunday that the shooting of two New York police officers by a gunman many view as deranged should prompt more muscular efforts to force individuals with mental illness into treatment
This man was crying out for someone who needed to be treated. He was being told to be treated. People were saying he was bizarre. People were saying he was frightening. A teacher wouldn't be near him without a guard being there," Giuliani said. "Gosh, you would think, at some point along the way he would have been evaluated."
It's good to see the former Mayor using the tragic events over the weekend to make a statement about mental health. Frankly, I expected him to say something nasty and vicious, like the shootings were the result of “four months of propaganda starting with the President." So it's good to see the "new" Rudy passing up a chance to make a despicable, slanderous political point.
Wait. . . . What?
Those quotes were from 2011 and Guiliani was talking about Jared Lochner, who shot Gabby Giffords and killed six people?
Oh. Never mind. (apologies to Emily Litella and the spirit of Gilda Radner.)
Actually, No. I do mind. I mind a lot that the likes of Rudy, Peter King, Scott, Brown, Lindsey Graham, the unconscionable Patrick Lynch and the entire right wing noise machine are blaming the murders on those like the President, who have made only the mildest critique of police actions. Or even that Garner-Brown protestors are the cause of this tragedy.
These are the same people who cry Slander! when liberals or the media dare to point out that right wing domestic terrorists like abortion clinic killers or cop killers Jerad and Amanda Miller are avid Fox watchers and Rush listeners.
These are many of the same people who lionized those in the Cliven Bundy confrontation who were breaking all kinds of federal laws
As DarkScholarB2 pointed out in an excellent diary, Ideology vs. Pathology:
My Gut Reaction (Part One): When looking for an opinion about the police, it's probably best not to go to a man whose name was used as a battle cry by a group of cops while they sodomized a man.
My Gut Reaction (Part Two): Why is it that when a right winger kills a bunch of people, the media bend over backwards not to connect his political views to it, but when someone who is nominally left wing kills people, the media rush to blame politicians?
