The 2008 bombing of the Times Square Recruitment center is back in the news, though in a back-door kinda way. Jerry Koch was finally released from prison, kept there until now for his refusal to testify before a grand jury. The abuse of the grand jury system illustrated by his incarceration really has nothing to do with the bombing itself. He had admitted no knowledge of the bombing, but viewed the grand jury not as a legitimate attempt to find the bomber, but as a blatant attempt to harass the activist community. There is some justification for his belief.
However, that's not the subject of today's poem. "By their works you shall know them," the Old Book says. I don't want to harm your reading of the poem, so I'll shut the fuck up now.
Times Square Recruitment, 2008
Who's your boss?
A rich one, no doubt.
This is a world without
employee lockers.
Where else is a kid
going to hang his jacket?
Even then,
climb in the way-back machine,
see for yourself.
Even then, we knew.
This massive employee locker
shortage,
work faster,
for less,
never see the man behind
the curtain.
That's your job.
Curtains come in many colors.
Easy to see,
you're wearing the company logo.
More good is accomplished
by keying a limo
than in every fucking one
of the curtain tricks in New York City.
