This is not snark, although I bet it would score well for packing hot-button keywords into a title.
News reports this morning are saying that my infuriating Representative, Renee Ellmers of NC-2, has lost track of an AR-15 last seen yesterday, when it was leaning against a gun safe in her unlocked garage.
Congresswoman Ellmers is an outspoken opponent of the Affordable Care Act and everything else I care about, and voted against raising the debt ceiling and reopening the government. She is one of those Republican idealogues who respond to any expression of an opposing view by raising the pitch of their voices while reiterating the talking points, implying that anything not in keeping with those points is not eligible for consideration.
She also takes months and months to respond to constituent contacts, fwiw. Don't know if we have a chance of defeating her, but I'm hoping to get with a big group going face-to-face with low-frequency voters and presenting all of the new reasons to vote in midterm elections.
9:28 AM PT: As is customary, I thank those who have raised this to the level of the Rec List, and note that it is my first time (blush). I don't kid myself that it's because of the presentation, so much as the number of themes of interest that come together in this incident.
I can only hope that no one is killed with the weapon, and that this incident helps us move toward voting Renee Ellmers out and spreading skepticism of the "Responsible Gun Owner" myth, and ultimately to adding some reasonable controls on guns.
