So why aren't progressives sounding the alarm?
He's not a mass murderer or a terrorist. He's not crazy. (except for like a fox) He's not armed in any conventional sense of the word. Rather, the most dangerous man in the country right now is armed to the teeth with a billion dollars to burn, an insatiable, ungodly lust for even more wealth and power, and he's hellbent on destroying the entire social-safety-net in America. I know many of us have heard his name before. In fact, it's mentioned a lot in passing. But I don't think nearly enough of our attention is directed toward him... or his agenda.
Peter G. Peterson is an American financier extraordinaire (think Mitt Romney... but with a higher god complex... and on steroids) and the founder of the Blackstone Group L.P. which is described by Wikipedia as...
... an American-based alternative asset management and financial services company that specializes in private equity, real estate, and credit and marketable alternative investment strategies, as well as financial advisory services, such as mergers and acquisitions (M&A), restructurings and reorganizations, and private placements.
Peterson's self-appointed, decades-long mission to dismantle the U.S. socioeconomic structure and expropriate entitlement funds is now operating from within his recently created (and insidiously titled)
"Campaign to Fix the Debt" which Peterson leads from the shadows. He's enlisted his friends on Madison Avenue, an assemblage of influential "elder statesmen" and 127 corporate CEOs to carry out his quest to rob Social Security and Medicare funding on a massive scale -- a scale that could rival or even surpass the upward wealth distribution in 2008 carried out by Wall Street.
Peterson has indeed spread his wealth far and wide -- from the halls of Congress to all the way down Pennsylvania Avenue -- and from Wall Street to the big-six multimedia complexes. His willingness to spend untold amounts of money rivals that of the Koch Brothers and Sheldon Adelson combined.
Peter G. Peterson made a fortune at the Blackstone Group on Wall Street. He conveniently cashed out with $2 billion shortly before the 2008 financial meltdown and now has pledged to spend $1 billion of that payout to convince Americans -- who overwhelmingly want to keep and strengthen Social Security and Medicare -- that these programs threaten our very existence as a nation.
The Center for Media and Democracy's PRWatch
We need to organize a campaign of our own. We need a sustained nationwide effort across the progressive blogosphere to make the name, Pete Peterson, as infamous, reviled and discredited as the Koch Brothers. And we need to shine a bright light on the "Fix-the-Debt" campaign and all it's operatives -- both Democrats (Steve Rattner, Ed Rendell and others) and Republicans. (insert your favorite right-wing congressional/corporate shill here)
(actually, the Democrats taking part in this insidious scheme should be publicly shamed and ostracized)
