More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

First African-American Medal of Honor Recipient Safeguarded Flag
WASHINGTON, Feb. 19, 2013 – The U.S. flag has been a symbol of American courage and patriotism for more than 200 years, and those who serve in the military hold it in high reverence.

So it’s no surprise that Army Sgt. William H. Carney risked his life in 1863 to safeguard the symbol of American pride and inspiration, earning the distinction of being the first African-American to be awarded the Medal of Honor.

Carney, the son of slaves, was born in Norfolk, Va., on Feb. 29, 1840. As a young man, he was ambitious and eager to learn, and excelled in academics despite laws and restrictions banning African-Americans from learning to read and write.

After his parents’ slave owner died, the Carneys were granted their freedom. Carney’s father moved further north, searching for a suitable area to settle down. After stops in Pennsylvania and New York, the elder Carney took his family to New Bedford, Mass.

Carney spent the remainder of his adolescence in New Bedford, working odd jobs and pursuing his interests in the church. He attended services at the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church and Union Baptist Church, and was on the precipice of making ministry his life’s work when the Civil War began. Carney decided he could better serve God by serving in the military to help free the oppressed.

On March 4, 1863, Carney, along with 40 other African-Americans from New Bedford, joined Company C, 54th Massachusetts Colored Infantry Regiment, to fight in the Civil War.  read more>>>

They are paid less than anyone else because they lack the skills to get a better job. They are not able to get paid more than the statutory minimum because the supply of unskilled labor is greater than the demand. Thus if they walked off the job, they could be (and would be) replaced immediately. Sounds harsh, but it is the truth.

      •  Yeah, not everyone lacks the skills... (3+ / 0-)

I have two undergraduate degrees, both science/technical and I'm looking for work.  It seems about the only thing employers think I'm capable of doing (or worthy of being paid) is minimum wage work.  Also, I'd like to introduce my fiancee to you.  She has an AA and she too can't find a real career job.

Please don't paint all minimum wage workers as people lacking skills.  Is it true for some? Sure.  True for all - not even close.

and bioinformatics, and 25 years of experience in software engineering in Silicon Valley. I am also a 61-year-old (trans) woman. I transitioned 10 years ago, and since transitioning I was only able to get hired for minimum wage jobs.

        Go figure...

Hits the nail on the head, yet again.

With poignancy, cultural awareness, and sharp criticism pointed correctly.

    Nice one. Again.

  •  Boeher is making the old Resmuglican claim that (0+ / 0-)

increasing the minimum wage costs jobs. This makes no sense. If he at least argued that businesses would pass along the expense to consumers, that would be a semi-legitimate argument (though, not a convincing reason not to do it). But, the idea that an employer responds to increased costs by cutting the labor that produces his profit is idiotic. If the price of nails goes up, does a carpenter (a) stop working, or (b) charge a little more for his work to cover the cost of nails. If you answered (b), you're too smart to be a Resmuglican.

Just doing my part to piss off right wing nuts, one smart ass comment at a time.
