I got my start in data processing back in the '60 and I've seen a lot of its history happen, so I'm a bit puzzled about all the furor over Steve Jobs and Apple. I was listening to NPR today and a commentator referred to Jobs as an inventor and innovator and it just struck me wrong. I've watched Apple and Jobs for a long time and I've never thought of him in that way at all.
To me, he's always been a marketer, pure and simple.
I can't think of a single thing he invented. He's developed and marketed a lot of attractive products, but none of them strike me as technically innovative. They all seem to be elaborations on prior art. The best I can say is that he advertises well, I mean really well.
