Just HOW are we going to counter a full election cycle post-Citizens United? I mean, Citizens U played a significant role in yesterday's election. Chalk this up with a full election cycle to fill candidates' warchests, and the fact that many people will most likely have long forgotten Citizens U, I can just picture these elections being bought and paid for the second the wire transfers get cleared and the ink dries on the checks.
Maybe I'm panicking over my own shadow about this, but just how exactly are the average American people, who-dat amateurs with amateur-level resources, going to compete with political and corporate professionals who can buy and pay everything their sockpuppet politicians need: enough TV commercials to cover virtually every TV show, from 12:00:00AM to 11:59:59PM; Banner ads that appear on virtually every page; paid GOTV salesman and saleswomen that have memorized the talking points binder (the good looking ones will travel door-to-door, the rest will man the phones); and not to mention their current resources of the media. Couple this with the front that these candidates are real Americans just like me, everyday people with commonly shared values, who desperately need your help, whatever you can donate, to allow them to serve you and take down the big bad government/organization/corporation...
We may have spirit, we may have courage, we may have every necessary intangible, but I'm concerned all the pep rallies and rah-rah-rah speeches aren't going to be enough against tangible resources that can create powerful illusions, powerful messages, over a powerful medium and a powerful network.
If 2010, the first post-Citizens U election is any indication, 2012 looks to be a lost battle we still have to fight. It's a Presidential-year election, the attention is going to be bigger, the stakes are going to be higher, the preparations are going to be longer...
Am I the only one worried about this? Am I getting concerned over nothing? Help me out here.
