I dropped by the rally in San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza this afternoon. It was a smallish demonstration by San Francisco standards, but there was a lot of feeling in the crowd and a lot of energy from the stage; there was at least one pretty good rap performance, and a speaker broke down when he asked for a moment of silence, talking about a friend of his who died on the street in Iran when "she was shot in the heart."
I learned, and forgot, the Farsi word for "freedom".
The plurality of the crowd looked Persian, with a good number of supportive non-Iranians. Most people wore green somewhere, and green headbands and wristbands had been made available. I bought a green rubber wristband and noticed it was (of course) MADE IN CHINA. I wondered if the person holding the large Tibetans-for-Iran sign would wear one.
Many people had their Victory fingers painted green. A lot of very serious-sounding speeches were made in Farsi; I wish I had any facility for languages.
