I live in Fort Worth, home of the hysterical (per Maddow show guest last night) large school district closing. My kids are both in public school and yesterday was their first day home from school. My 8 year old began to run a fever yesterday afternoon and my mother in law didn't want to worry me so she didn't call. I got home at 8 pm to a child with a 101 degree fever. She was fine when I left for work at 11 am.
My kiddo told me she had a headache and a sore throat. She has always been easily infected with strep throat; so immediately I take a peak in her throat to see if there are any tell tale pus pockets, and I find two. Because of the media, I am grateful to suspect the kiddo has strep throat..can you say WTF!
Later in the evening, my elder daughter tells me the little had been bawling hysterically earlier in the day when she realized she was sick. She didn't want to have the swinest(that is what she has been calling it) flu and die. I am ticked at the school district for closing over one case. I am ticked at the media for blowing this up so big; that my little one was afriad she was going to die yesterday.
Today she is going to the Dr., as she will need antibiotics if this is indeed strep throat. The office did tell me that because of her symtoms, sore throat, fever, headache they will be testing her for the flu anyway. So I had to sit with her and explain that while they will be testing her for the flu, it doesn't mean they even suspect she had it; they just have to be careful.
I am glad we are being kept up on this flu. I just wish it wasn't so hysterical. I am glad that I can get my kid into the dr's office on short notice. I just wish they would wait to test for the flu, only after they did a quick strep test. I just wish my child weren't so frightened now, because it makes being sick so much worse.
