Former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger made a fool out of himself this morning as he attempted to balance out Colin Powell's Obama endorsement by appearing on Morning Joe.
As Morning Joe is to Meet the Press, Eagleburger is to Powell.
He called Obama "Governor." He turned into a grumpy old man when Larry O'Donnell questioned his reasoning. He attempted to make the experience argument -- Obama has no foreign policy experience, you know. When it was pointed out to him that George Bush had no foreign policy experience, that Ronald Reagan had none, he revealed his real agenda --- it depends upon who is running against whom.
OK, so it's not just about McCain's enormous foreign policy experience -- which seems to me mostly about traveling to foreign countries and shaking hands with foreign leaders and about a penchant for invading other countries. It's really about McCain's opponent in contrast to Reagan's opponent and Bush's opponent.
Never mind that President Carter achieved the only pact between Israel and another Middle East country ever. Never mind that John Kerry had more foreign policy experience in his pinkie than George Bush had in entire Josh Brolin-buff body.
Sort of makes you wonder: Now what is it about whom McCain is running against that really causes Eagleburger to be so angry in his opposition to Obama?
Eagleburger scowled his way out of the segment by fuming that if we wanted to have a president with no foreign experience, then go ahead and vote for Obama.
Now that's one piece of advice from the former secretary of state that I'll be glad to take to heart.
