For years, the latte-sippin' liberal was a staple of GOP demonology. That frothy coffee drink, beloved by many of all political persuasions, unfortunately played squarely into Republican talking points.
It had a funny, foreign-sounding name. It seemed upscale, urban, elitist. And it started with an "L," which made it a perfect pairing with "liberal" for alliterative slogan purposes.
But have you noticed that McDonald's now offers lattes -- cappuccinos, too -- and is rolling them out with a full-fledged national ad campaign? Folks, when Mickey D's adopts something, it's officially mainstream. Next time you hear a Republican make a sneering remark about lattes, remind them that any American in any red state small-town can get a latte at their local McDonald's. And the world's largest restaurant chain didn't put this product on their menu because they hoped to sell a few to a handful of effete snobs. They know that real 'Murricans order lattes, too.
