Over at Fox News' website:
An accused enemy combatant held at Guantanamo Bay told a military hearing he was physically as well as mentally tortured there by having to read a newsletter full of 'crap,' being forced to use unscented deodorant and shampoo and having to play sports with a ball that would not bounce.
So starts the piece currently on Fox News website as I write this.
That's the intro of the piece, and the front page blurb has similar content.
Clearly, those Gitmo folks are just a bunch of whiners and sissies, right?...
Well, let's read a little more into the story...I wanna see where he complains about his deodorant!
Except, none of that material is mentioned again. When we read the actual account of his treatment (deep into the story, not at the beginning), what do we find?
Ali Shoukat Khan said his son was kidnapped in Pakistan and that there, Americans tortured his son "for eight hours at a time, tying him tightly in stressful positions in a small chair until his hands, feet and mind went numb. ... He was often hooded and had difficulty breathing. They also beat him repeatedly, slapping him in the face, and deprived him of sleep.
Odd...why wasn't that covered in the front page blurb?
Furthermore, the AP story which the Fox piece is based puts these complaints into context as part of a long description of conditions in the camp, not as specific, key grievances (although, alas, I find no mention of deodorant in that piece).
So, the important, disturbing information (such as Majid Khan's attempted suicide by gnawing on his arm) gets buried, while Fox's front page pretends that Gitmo detainess have nothing more to complain about than their shampoo.
I suppose my outrage-o-meter should be shot by now, but this managed to tick the needle.
