For those that think the "Back door draft", discussed so profusely about 2 years ago, has gone away, they may be surprised to find out that it is alive and well. As reported at
The Command T.O.C., the Army continues to force people back into the military, beyond their contracted service date and threatens less than honorable discharges if they do not show up. This is also reported in
The Huffington Post and it is a travesty.
It started in 2004 with an IRR call up due to the war in Iraq and the stretch of our soldiers. However, the furor caused the military to publicly say they would abandon this policy as it received a huge national outcry about a "back door draft". Quietly, however, it has returned and returned in a strong way.
They are now recalling year group 1998 Captains from USMA and putting them into a skill they are not trained for (Civil Affairs). What is worse, is that these Captains are due to separate from the Army in May of 2006. However, the Army is saying that since they are "on orders" they cannot now resign from the military. They must stay in for the duration of their recall which is 1.5 years.
The Captains have organized and expect to see a lawsuit soon. But, I am so stinking mad at the fact that the Army is going against what they have said publicly. Again, another lie!
