In spite of what I know about the mainstream media, I am a subscriber to the Chicago Tribune. One of my favorite sections is the Perspective Section in the Sunday paper. It is a separate section with opinions and analysis from people in different fields about current events. I always looked forward to reading that section because it gave me a better understanding and sometimes a different perspective of the world and this nation. However, in the last several weeks I noticed a change in that section. The articles lacked a kind of importance, or relevance to the problems this nation is facing. At first I thought is was just my imagination, but as several weeks went by, it became apparent to me that something was different.
Today's paper confirmed my suspicions and I realized that it was not my imagination. So, I did what any good Kossack would do - I wrote an email to the editors of the Perspective Section with my observations and criticism. Here is my email:
I am bothered by the Perspective Section of the Tribune. Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed a change in the tone of that section. I couldn't put my finger on it, but in today's section it definitely took a turn to Perspective Light. What I am referring to is an article on the front page by Barbara Brotman re the demise of the Walkman. On page 2 there is an article about Condi's exercise program. I couldn't care less about either of these two articles when this country is faced with illegal spying by this administration of the citizens of this country. And a President who believes he has inherent power to do whatever he wants.
And the "Poetry Slam Contest" on page two!!! What is that doing in this section??? Maybe the commentary section should be renamed the "Fun, Games and Lifestyle" section. Or maybe just get rid of serious commentary altogether. Is this what the Brave New World is going to look like? Editorial soma for the masses?
I have several back issues of the Perspective, so I looked back for comparisons. One thing I noticed is that the editors of that section are now Louise Kiernan and Steve Mills. In the Feb. 5 issue the editor was Charles Madigan. I saved that issue because of the good commentary on the front page. The commentary on Feb. 5 was written by FOUR people who are NOT Tribune staff reporters. The entire March 12 Perspective section contains commentary by nothing BUT staff reporters. Where are the opinions from outside sources?
The Perspective Section is the first section I turn to when I get the Sunday paper. However, if it going to print inane subjects like the ones in today's paper, I am tempted to cancel my subscription.
In spite of the bashing of the mainstream media, I have supported the Tribune with my subscription. I am now on the fence about my support and will monitor the Perspective over the next several weeks. If it doesn't come back to newsworthy commentary, then I see no reason to continue my support.
