(09/08/05) BROOKHAVEN - A Brookhaven ambulance company is defying the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and heading down to the Gulf Coast Thursday to help victims of Katrina.
FEMA officials told the company that no volunteers were needed right now and they should wait to be deployed. Members of the South Country Ambulance Company were tired of waiting
for approval from FEMA to go help survivors of the hurricane. The chief of the company says FEMA should have tapped into the vast resources Suffolk County can provide.
The six volunteers will meet with an EMT unit in Mississippi and stay to help for a few weeks.
