A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

A staple in my childhood home
I am an unabashed Crayolaphile. As a kid I would always beg my mother for a new box of crayons every time we went to the store. I loved to just look at them in the box, never knowing if it would be better to save them, pristine and unused, or to test each one out and see the colors across the page. Once my sisters had begun to use the crayons, worn them down or broken them, to my mind they'd be ruined. My mother, of course, did not agree, and simply tossed them all into the large shoe box we used to store them and told me, "we have enough crayons".
The 64 Crayola box was the ultimate prize to my 10 year old mind. My mother would never buy them. "64," she would say, "is excessive. You don't need more than 24 crayons". And thus was it decided. The 24 sized box was what school required we bring and my mother was never one for excess. So sometimes I would just go to the store and open the boxes to see all the colors, and simply read the exotic names: periwinkle blue, cadet grey, lemon yellow, raw umber. Even the names fascinated me. I couldn't really imagine how you could have more than the standard 24 colors, but that box proved that you could.
When I did finally get a box of 64, it was my father I had talked into it. He was usually an easier mark, but only if I went to the store alone with him. I brought the box home and hid it under my bed, to keep it away from my sisters. They were not going to break any of these beauties! That was the year that we had discovered the joys of taking the Polaroid camera outside and snapping photos of anything we could imagine. So I took my box outside and spread the crayons in the grass, snapping photos of the colors as they fell on top of each other. My mother framed those photos and gave them to my grandparents as Christmas presents that year. And my sisters teased me endlessly as the only person in the world who wouldn't color with her crayons.
The year I turned 35 was Crayola's 100th anniversary. My mother called me at my home in Florida to tell me to expect a package from my Father shortly. She and he had been to the grocery store that day and while standing in the check-out line my father had seen the 100th anniversary box display. He tossed one into their cart. My mother gave him the raised eyebrow lift and he replied, "For E. These were always her favorites". Sure enough, a week later I got a box of 64s in the mail, in a commemorative tin. I still have that tin and not a single crayon has been used from the box. But i do still like to open it up and look at all the pretty colors.
What pretty color would you look at today?

by peregrine kate ♥ for Motor City Kossacks
The Kossacks in Detroit are in the planning stages of getting ready to host Netroots Nation 2014. peregrine kate has them organized and ready to go. Their last meet-up was about all the efforts they are making to reach out to local Dem orgs to setting up the lounge area in the Exhibition Hall for the conference. Our hats are off to them for all the work they're doing and I look forward to seeing them all the third week in July.
