There should be exactly zero people accidentally shot at gun shows.  I've had to leave the occasional (public, unsupervised) range when the blinkety-blanks show up.

Seriously, when I'm working on a gun, the ammunition is out of the room because I don't want even the faintest possibility of an accident. If I see a "gunsmith" who doesn't do this, then I'm outta there.

negligent idiot.  There are no two ways about it.  This incident should never have occurred.  Had he observed proper handling and safety precautions this wouldn't have happened.  There is no excuse.

The thing is that the same thing can be said about many other sorts of incidents commonly called accidents (regardless of whether they were accidental or negligence).  Had the rules been followed the "accident" probably wouldn't have happened and if it did, the damage would have been reduced and contained.

That being said, the venue could have taken better precautions as the gun clearing and checking was being done in a public area, which was a mistake.  They should have provided a safe and secure area for people to double check and clear any guns being brought in.  This is akin to the rule at the gun range I go to where all guns must remain in a holster or a closed case unless you are on the firing line.  Any range guns being carried to or from the line must be empty with the slide back (empty chamber).  No exceptions.

A man in the lane next to me had his son of approximately 12 years old shooting an AK-47.

When the AK malfunctioned, junior did the "Hey Dad! This thing's jammed!" thing and, you guessed it, swung the muzzle right past me.

If the pilot's good, see, I mean if he's reeeally sharp, he can barrel that baby in so low... oh you oughta see it sometime. It's a sight. A big plane like a '52... varrrooom! Its jet exhaust... frying chickens in the barnyard!
