That same day, TransCanada announced it would file a new permit application.

Just when you thought it was safe... it's back! Well, sort of. The original Spider Friday diaries were written by Hekebolos, aka Dante Atkins. I hope he's ok with me hijacking his series this once.

Chevron has been trying to delay, deny, and distort its responsibility for the billions of gallons of toxic waste left behind when it ceased operations in Ecuador 1992. In the words of one Chevron spokesman, "We’re going to fight this until Hell freezes over — and then we’ll fight it out on the ice."

But after almost 18 years, environmentalists and social justice activists have reason to celebrate. Last week, Chevron got smacked down in court twice over its attempt to avoid paying for the destruction it caused in the Amazon Rainforest in Ecuador. Not only did an appeals court uphold the $18 billion awarded by a trial court last year in Ecuador, but a US District Court judge dismissed its attempt to wriggle out of paying altogether.

Yesterday (pdf), the US Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that video games with violent content are protected by the First Amendment's free speech clause. The case in question, Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association, involves a 2005 California law that sought to restrict sales of video games to minors without parental supervision. Although lower courts have consistently rejected similar bans on video game sales to minors, this is the first ruling by the Supreme Court on the subject. This puts video games in the same category of protected speech as movies, books, and other art.

Using Chinese prisoners as a cheap source of labor is nothing new, as a simple Google search will demonstrate. But a story appearing in the Guardian yesterday claims that Chinese prisoners are being exploited in a new way: Forcing prisoners to perform repetitive tasks in massively multiplayer online (MMO) games to amass treasure. The authorities then convert the collected virtual loot into very real cash, usually by selling it to Western gamers.

"Gold farming," as the practice is known, is big business. The China Internet Centre estimates that in 2008, nearly £1.2bn ($1.96 billion USD) of virtual currency was traded in China.

This is just appalling.

A new study by MIT's Center for Global Change Science attempts to account for policy action to reduce carbon outputs on climate change. In this report, the model analyzed scenarios in which policies were adopted to reduce carbon output strongly, moderately, or not at all.

The most comprehensive modeling yet carried out on the likelihood of how much hotter the Earth's climate will get in this century shows that without rapid and massive action, the problem will be about twice as severe as previously estimated six years ago - and could be even worse than that.

I was heartened to see SolveClimate's diary (Florida Releases State Climate Plan: Huge Economic Gains, Redefines National Discussion) on the Rescue list today, for a couple of reasons. First, as I wrote in the comments, it's good to see some hard-core Rs addressing the causes of climate change, even if their motivation is more financial than environmental. I'm ok with that. I so much don't care why they do the right thing, just that they do it.

SolveClimate mentioned that the policy advisory group that Gov. Crist hired, the Center for Climate Strategies, had come under attack from "global warming deniers." I googled the Center for Climate Strategies and they seemed pretty non-controversial. In fact, I thought they looked like good prospects for my fledgling freelance writing/PR company. But since SolveClimate had mentioned this "controversy" I thought I should see what was creating all the fuss, to make sure I wasn't courting some greenwashing group.

The on again/off again shotgun marriage of Citigroup and Wachovia's commercial banking unit is off again.

Citi ends talks with Wells Fargo over Wachovia

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Banking giant Citigroup said Thursday it had ended talks with Wells Fargo about reaching an agreement to acquire parts of the struggling bank Wachovia and is no longer looking to buy any of Wachovia's assets.

Citigroup also said that it would not seek to block the merger agreement between Wells Fargo and Wachovia but that it would still seek damages from the two banks for breach of contract.

I'm assuming the "contract" being referred to was the one Wachovia was the shotgun wedding with Citi, arranged by the FDIC after market close on September 29. Citi's deal was for $2.2 billion for Wachovia's banking operations, but not the asset management or retail brokerage units. Citi's deal also included a guarantee from the FDIC that it would cover the losses on Wachovia's $300 billion mortgage portfolio beyond the first $42 billion.

That's a pretty sweet deal, especially in the current environment.

Researchers in Japan have made significant advance in stem cell research. In a nutshell, what they have been able to do is discover a verifiable, repeatable process for inducing pluripotency in ordinary somatic cells in mice. Pluripotency is the highly desirable characteristic possessed by embryonic stem cells that enables the to diversify into nearly any type of tissue. However, the amazing thing about this new process is that it does not require harvesting cells from embryos.
